So… on that documentation page, it says the following: "if you want
to use the "tab" navigation mode, you have to install the extended_menu
module first…"

That’s correct, but in my case there was more to it:

a.) activate the legacy mode in the plug-in manager for backwards compatibility
b.) download the /includes/patTemplate folder from the Joomla 1.0
release and upload it to the includes/ folder of Joomla 1.5 because you
will see it is missing in the new Joomla version
c.) in file //includes/patTemplate/patTemplate.php, I had to erase the re-declaration of
class patFactory beginning in line 2650, otherwise PHP will throw an error
